SandbachIn the 18th century there existed an interwoven web of Sandbach families prospering in South East Cheshire ... acquiring trades and moving to pastures new away from their small farms ... a middle class bulge ... read and feel the fun as a Birchaal married a Dickinson, a Dickinson married a Lunt, a lunt married a Colclough. a Colclough married a Hardern ...

The Dickinsons, Lunts, Colcloughs & Harderns - The Sandbach Mafia

The coupling of the Dickinson and Birchall families was confirmed in the will of John Birchall (1779-1850) Yeoman of Sandbach, which identified 'my nephew, Charles Dickinson' (and thus his sister Jane Birchall) ... this will and the marriage of sister Jane Birchall (1765-1847) link the two families ... Charles & James Dickinson were brothers, Sons of John & Jane Dickinson of Sandbach ...

It appeared at first that the Charles & James Dickinson link to James Birchall (1802-63) was just via marriage witnesses as friends & neighbours. James Dickinson withnessed the James Birchall & Sarah Richardson coupling in 1824 and Charles witnessed the marriage of Mary Ann Birchall (1825-1901) & George Neild in 1848.

However there was an earlier gene splicing event of importance in 1796 ...

John Dickinson (1769-1829) & Jane Birchall were married 17 Jan 1796 Sandbach ... by licence. John was a 26 year old Cordwainer and Jane a 30 year old spinster.

Who was this guy John Dickinson and who was his dad?

died 17 Nov 1790 Sandbach (1751911)

William & Sarah's children -

2.1 William Dickinson (1768-1836) son of William, baptised 20 Jan 1768 Sandbach
married Mary Bickerton (-) 4 August 1794 Middlewich ... (1736868) ... William aged 26 but son John was born in 1792?
(probably not married Mary Cook (-) 7 March 1819 Sandbach (1751911) ... this William was aged 52 and a Baker?)
died 7 April 1836 aged 69 ... (1751914)

William & Mary had a son -

NB Hannah was NOT born in Cheshire according to the 1841 census!

So who was Aunt Ann Colclough born around 1776?

Talke CrossThe Colcloughs

The Colcloughs were a Staffordshire brand. The story of silk throwing coming to East Cheshire from Italy via Derbyshire to water power at Stockport and the spread to the Pennine streams of Macclesfield, Congleton and Sandbach was well known. The Birchalls may have followed the trek from field to the mills but some of the Colcloughs from Staffordshire probably accompanied the coals from Talke Pits to the Cheshire salt ... and perhaps even from the Talke Pits to the Lawton brines as the Cheshire salt aficionado Calvert confirmed. For sure Staffordshire coal spurred the East Cheshire mills as they moved from water to steam power. Such were well trodden paths.

Talke to Sandbach was an easy 7 miles. Talke Pits was remembered tragically for the mining explosion in 1866 ... but maybe the Colcloughs trek followed the ancient route into Cheshire from Uttoxeter through the 'gap' followed by canals, railways and the M6.

The name, 'James Colclough', witnessed the will of James Birchall (1741-1825) in 1825 ... James, Yeoman of Sandbach, was the founder of The Sandbach Birchalls ...

These connections with the Sandbach Birchalls run from James Dickinson (1802-63) as a witness at James & Sarah Birchall's wedding in 1824 & to James Colclough as a witness to the James Birchall (1741-1825) will a year later ...

So who was James Colclough who was around Sandbach in 1825?

Looks like Nancy was one of the Sandbach Birchalls?
Wikipedia to the rescue - Nancy = English name = Grace. Nancy was originally a diminutive form of Anne, originated as a contraction of 'mine Ancy', with Ancy being a nickname for Annis, a Medieval English variation of Agnes. In the 18th century it began being used in its own right, as well as a nickname for Ann.
Was our Nancy an Ann?
Ann Birchall (1776-) was Jane's young sister, Daughter of James, baptised 9 Sept 1776 Sandbach  ...
... Ann aka Nancy was the mysterious Aunt Ann Colclough !

 James Colclough (1791-1828) died 24 Sept 1828 Sandbach, (1751912) - admon issued in 1829 -

Seems this guy James Colclough (1791-1828) married into two of the families of interest - the Betchton Harderns and the Sandbach Birchalls ... and was close to the Dickinsons - 3.1 Sarah Dickinson (1797-) and 3,2 Charles Dickinson (1798-) ... looks like this pair were the kids of 2.2 John Dickinson (1769-1829) & Jane Birchall (1765-1847) i.e. daughter Sarah & son Charles ?!
